hello everyone! this live album on bandcamp lacks the last song, "Scrape", because it was written not by me but by Blue Stahli and I covered it. Bandcamp rules do not allow to post cover versions here, but I officially allow you to download this song if you find it on the Internet. :)
and now the story behind the album.
the Steampunk Tapes were recorded at the first steampunk community convention in St. P., which was called Steampunk Night. everybody came in costumes. I played a white grand piano. Kit, who is the nicest guy in the world and who I have been working with for over a year, accompanied me in two songs on cuatro - a ten-string instrument from the lute family. by the way, Kit has his own psych folk band Salmon of Wisdom.
two guys from the Moscow band Absent Sunday made up a vagabond recording company they called GigsGeeks. they attached two mics to the piano and recorded everything I played. this recording was later mixed and mastered by my friend Dron, who plays in the band MKP№1 and works as a sound engineer at the studio Gravity Records.
we did play a little unevenly, and I threw out two pieces which were most uneven. I always improvise and give in to the music, it pains me to play anything twice in the same way. sometimes this habit, not playing anything twice, affects my technique, and that can pass unnoticed at the concert but sound drastically horrible on the recording.
the fourth song, I Need Your Darkness, was written by me and my friend Minky (Michael Yermolaev). we were sitting in the kitchen of his Moscow apartment, and I had some fresh lyrics which wouldn't go with any music I made. that's when he came up with this riff. we decided to record it together shortly afterwards, but Minky couldn't get hold of a specific guitar he wanted to use in the recording, so we postponed our plan. Kit and I made a quick cuatro-piano arrangement of the song for the Steampunk Night, since I very much wanted to play it. Minky is coming back to St.P very soon, and I hope we will record it next year.
a day after the show, I was IM-ed by the photographer Darque London, who had been taking pictures of the whole convention. I liked his pictures, and we decided to use one of them for the album cover.
I also met Mi Minor, who would be the future director of the video for "Black One" (the first song in this album). the video was released in January 2015, and you can watch it on youtube:
